Exploring the Small Farm Dream – Workshop in Wayne County, NY

According to the 2007 Agriculture Census, Wayne County is one of a few counties in New York state that is growing in farm numbers. While many of these farms are start-ups, several farms that were once a “figment” a couple of years ago, are now going full blast! Several past participants of this workshop are among those new growing farms.
The aim of this workshop is to help those thinking about small-scale commercial farming and learning what it takes to get this business off the ground. This is the fourth year that this program has been offered.
Participation in the workshop is limited and by application only. Sessions will run for 3 hrs once a week for 4 weeks with activities that will need to be completed between sessions to allow the participant to achieve their goals for learning. Classes will be on March 24 (Wed..), March 31 (Wed.), April 7(Wed.) and April 20 (Tue.), 2010 at 6:00pm at the CCE office in Newark. Please call the office, 315-331-8415 if you are interested in attending. Applications are also available on the Wayne County Cooperative Extension . Just search “small farm dream”. A $75 registration fee, including workbook and supporting materials, will be charged for those accepted into the program. Applications are due March 19.
Growing New Farmers Internship and Incubator Program in Delaware County, NY
Farm Catskills has developed the Growing New Farmers program to help nurture new farms in Delaware County, and help those interested in agriculture start down a path towards a successful business. New farmers can find the nurturing, supportive community they need in Delaware County through a highly tailored, individualized program. Working one on one with each participant in the program, Farm Catskills wants to figure out how they can help you meet your farming goals. Depending on your own needs and resources, the "Growing New Farmers" program can provide you with paid training, business planning, or affordable access to land and equipment to start your own business.
If you are interested in starting your own farm or career in agriculture, please apply to the Growing New Farmers program. In their internship track, hard-working individuals can gain the hands-on experience needed to succeed in agriculture and ultimately start their own farm. A limited number of paid internships are available. For those with the appropriate experience and interest in starting to farm, the Incubator will provide access to land, equipment, and a supportive community.
