July fruit/vegetable crops

Postby wyandik on Thu Jan 15, 2009 1:58 pm

We currently run a farm stand Aug-Nov in the mid-Hudson Valley and we're looking for fruit and vegetable crops with high direct-consumer retail potential that we can begin growing to expand our season earlier into July. Everything we grow we sell on the farm. Our soils are relatively well-drained (mostly Castile and Blasdell series) and we farm conventionally.

If anyone can share emerging market potential for any July-ripening fruits or vegetables it would be gratefully received.

We have an arrangement to buy and sell peaches from a neighboring farm, so we've ruled out growing those ourselves.

We're thinking about late-ripening "Hudson" cherries, but worry about bird damage (any thoughts on this would be great).

Cheers, Will

hello i don't like gardening for the birds either. so, as a solution i am currently trying some bush cherries from Lawrence nurseries last year i received a small crop and to discourage the birds i sprayed them with a cheep dish soap and water solution in a hand held sprayer. it worked well. i've gotten really interested in high tunnel production lately, and there is a lot of new research and information on growing raspberries in high tunnels to extend their season and grow a higher-quality crop. now i don't know if this would fit for your farm and your goals and all that, but it's something i'm looking into seriously for my operation.
